Consider a visit if you have a new partner, a partner has told you about an infection, you notice discharge, sores, pain or burning, or you are due for routine screening based on your age and risk. Many STIs can have no symptoms. Tell us when a possible exposure happened; testing too soon can miss some infections, and your clinician may advise repeat testing at the right time. A visit starts with a private discussion of symptoms, sexual practices and possible exposures. Depending on that history, a clinician may recommend a urine test, a vaginal or other site-specific swab, or a blood test. Testing may cover chlamydia, gonorrhea, HIV, syphilis, hepatitis or other infections when indicated. A genital urine test alone may not answer a question about exposure at a different site.
We will explain which tests are ordered and which are not. Herpes blood testing, for example, is not an automatic part of every screening panel; a new sore may call for a lesion sample and a different evaluation. Ask the team about collection instructions, result timing and any separate lab charges before your visit.
If a test is positive, your clinician can explain the diagnosis and recommend treatment or specialist care as appropriate. Some infections are treated with medication, while others need ongoing management. We will discuss whether partners should be evaluated, when sex can be resumed and whether repeat testing is recommended. Results and treatment timing depend on the test and clinical circumstances.
If you have severe pelvic or testicular pain, fever with worsening symptoms, or a possible pregnancy with significant pain or bleeding, seek prompt urgent or emergency evaluation rather than waiting for routine testing. For a possible recent HIV exposure, contact a clinician or emergency service immediately because post-exposure care is time-sensitive.
Your visit and results are handled as medical information. Some infections must be reported to public health authorities under applicable law; your clinician can explain the process. If privacy or insurance communication is a concern, ask the team how results, billing and portal messages are handled before scheduling.
